For anyone planning a caravan purchase, this matters because the real affordability test is not limited to the van's purchase price. A safe and suitable towing set-up may also require a capable vehicle, weight-distribution equipment, brake controllers, suspension upgrades, tyres, insurance and higher fuel allowances. Even where a buyer already owns a tow vehicle, it is worth checking payload, towing capacity, gross combination mass and servicing requirements before committing to a heavier van.

The finance angle is straightforward: lenders assess whether repayments are manageable against income, debts and living expenses. If a buyer is also upgrading a tow vehicle, the combined commitments can change borrowing capacity quickly. A loan that looks comfortable when viewed in isolation may become tighter once registration, insurance, campsite fees, maintenance and touring fuel are added to the household budget.

This is especially relevant for regional families, retirees and self-employed buyers who may use one vehicle for both daily transport and travel.
