Softer Used-Car Prices Could Shift Finance Decisions

Why buyers should look beyond the sticker price before applying

Australia's used-car market appears to be moving into a more balanced phase, with recent industry updates pointing to improved vehicle availability and less pressure on prices across some mainstream segments.
That is welcome news for buyers who spent the past few years dealing with limited stock, long new-car wait times and unusually firm second-hand values.

For households planning a vehicle purchase, the finance impact can be significant. A lower purchase price may reduce the amount borrowed, lower the deposit needed to reach a comfortable loan-to-value position, or create room in the budget for insurance, registration and maintenance. But softer pricing does not automatically mean every used car is a bargain, or that every loan will be cheaper.

The first issue is valuation. Lenders commonly assess the vehicle as part of a secured car loan application, especially when the car is being used as security. If the agreed purchase price is higher than the lender's view of market value, the buyer may need a larger deposit or may face tighter approval conditions. This is particularly relevant where a vehicle has high kilometres, limited service history, prior accident damage or a price that sits above comparable listings.

Vehicle age also matters. Some lenders restrict secured loan terms for older cars, while others may price risk differently depending on the asset, borrower profile and repayment history. A cheaper used car can still become expensive if it attracts a higher rate, a shorter loan term, added fees or costly repairs soon after purchase. Buyers comparing dealer finance, bank loans and specialist lenders should focus on the total amount repayable, not just the advertised rate.

This used-car shift also extends our earlier coverage of recent new-vehicle sales signals. When new-car supply improves, some buyers return to showrooms, while others find better value in near-new and demonstrator stock. That can put pressure on late-model used prices, but popular SUVs, utes and efficient hybrids may still hold value more strongly than older or less in-demand models.

Before signing a contract, buyers may wish to compare similar vehicles, check ownership costs and estimate repayments using realistic rates and loan terms. It is also worth leaving a buffer for tyres, servicing, insurance excesses and unexpected repairs. In a cooling market, patience can be an advantage: the best outcome is not simply paying less for the car, but choosing finance that remains manageable long after the excitement of delivery day has passed.
